Millard Fillmore entered the presidency with an enormous task: to hold together a nation being torn apart by slavery and sectional conflict. In “Compromise, Conflict, and Canyons,” we follow Fillmore from his humble beginnings and unexpected rise to the White House to the Compromise of 1850, the controversial Fugitive Slave Act, and his attempt to delay a national crisis that was becoming impossible to avoid. Along the way, we’ll explore political parties with strange names, presidential cherries, Queen Victoria, and why one of America’s most forgotten presidents governed during one of its most important turning points. Fillmore may have helped America stop at the edge of the canyon, but the question remained: how long would it be before the country drove over the edge?
